Tonoh features two pianos and two pianists.

While seemingly identical, the two pianos are actually tuned a quarter-tone apart—a difference of 10 Hz. When the two pianists press the same key simultaneously, they produce two distinct sounds separated by a quarter-tone interval.

This slight offset—this subtle dissonance, however minute—endows the two instruments with distinct personalities. One is “higher” and more taut, while the other is looser and more docile.

Above all, this difference—stemming solely from the tuning of the instruments—creates a space, a rift, a small world where vibrational phenomena, shapes, and shadows unfold.

Tonoh is that abstract, repetitive, mischievous, and sinuous entity that exists only within a virtual space a quarter-tone wide—the space between the two pianos.
