Triptyque du Signal Sonore explores the fact that we have developed, over time, different mechanical and electronic means of producing sound. This composition therefore brings together three sound sources of different natures:
acoustic: classical guitar
analog: three analog oscillators / KORG Volca Bass
electronic: MIDI file generated using a patch created with OpenMusic
The order in which the sound sources are presented was chosen to symbolize, on the one hand, a kind of historical evolution of our ability to produce sound: with instruments for thousands of years, with oscillators since the second half of the 20th century, and then more recently with computer tools.
We observe a kind of “simplification” of sound, as acoustic sound is infinitely complex and digital quantum sound is a sequence of 1s and 0s, the result of a finite number of mathematical operations. Of course, this conjecture is less relevant if we consider the speaker that plays the midi file as an instrument in its own right and the computer tool as a kind of instrumentalist that produces a score which, through successive randomization operations, surpasses us.
